Situated just southeast of the city, about 15 minutes from town along winding Old Spanish Trail, Vail was originally a station and water stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad. Vail was named after pioneer rancher Edward Vail, who established a ranch in the area in the late 19th century. Vail deeded a right of way across his ranch to the railroad. His brother Walter Vail owned the nearby Empire Ranch, now part of the Las Cienegas National Conservation Area. Nestled at the base of the Rincons, the Academy Village at Rocking K Ranch offers active adults 55 and older a place where learning never ceases. Providing state-of-the-art technology, residents have access to the University of Arizona, as well as a learning center complete with a lecture and performance hall. Vail Links
