Moving Checklist Two Months Before: Compliments of Janie and Barrie Herr
Start to think about what you will be moving with you. Note the items that will require
special packing.
Arrange for estimates from moving companies, and check their references.
Start a file for moving expenses. If your move is for your work, many expenses will be tax
deductible.
Six weeks before:
Order boxes and packing materials.
Begin to use up food and cleaning supplies that should not be moved.
Check measurements and floor plan of new home to help determine what to move and
where you will place the items.
One month before:
Select your mover, and get written confirmation of costs and dates.
Start packing, beginning with the things you don't use often. Remember to mark your boxes with contents and the room the movers will put it in.
Visit your Post Office or go online at www.usps.com and complete a change of address form.
Utilities and newspapers: Cancel at old address, Start at new address
If you are moving out of the area, arrange travel for pets.
Check with your insurance company to ensure that you will be covered through your
homeowner's insurance or renter's policy.

Dept. of Motor Vehicles (for license and registrations) and Auto Club
Employer
Friends & Relatives
Insurance Companies (life, health, auto, homeowner's or rental)

Medical, Dental and other Health care professionals
Veterinarian
If you are moving out of your area:
Ask for copies, or transfer children's school records
Transfer medical records of family and pets
Collect drug, contact lens and eyeglass prescriptions to be transferred
Request Doctor, pharmacist, health club, etc. referrals in new city
Get information about auto and pet licensing requirements in new city
Two weeks before:
Have rugs cleaned and ask cleaner to have them wrapped for moving
Arrange for baby or pet sitters on moving day, if needed
Empty club and school lockers
Retrieve and return all borrowed items from library, neighbors, and friends
Confirm arrangements with movers
Hold a garage sale, or arrange for charities to pick up the items you will not be moving
If you are moving out of the area:
Have your car serviced
Transfer prescriptions to new pharmacy
One week before:
Fill prescriptions that you will need for a few weeks
Set aside all information pertaining to the home you are leaving, so it does not move with you
Dispose of flammable or toxic items
Empty safety deposit box and start a box that you will take with you, to include any
prescription drugs, important documents, jewelry or other valuables, etc.
Make a survival kit and include: paper, pens, stamps, envelopes, cellophane & heavy duty tape, scissors, tape measure, paper cups, ziplock bags, paper plates & towels, plastic utensils, facial & toilet tissue, instant coffee or tea, cream/sugar, soap, moist towelettes, aspirin, band-aids, can opener, bottled water, travel alarm, flashlight, small tool kit, trash bags, snacks or drinks, children's games, address book, spare car keys, phone books for the city you are leaving and your destination.
Day Before:
Empty refrigerator, defrost freezer, and have appliances serviced for moving
Pack a suitcase with clothes for a few days
Arrange for payment of Movers, Arrange to have some cash on hand
Prepare directions to your new home for the Movers, including your cell phone number or other way to reach you
Moving Day:
Remove bedding and towels and pack - mark the box so it is opened first
Make sure all drawers, shelves, and cabinets are empty
Clean the home, lock it up, and leave the keys as pre-arranged
Arriving at your New Home:
Make sure the utilities are on
Plan to be at new home when moving truck arrive and check moving inventory sheets while the movers are unloading to make sure all items are present. Note any damage that is visible.
